MAORI CHIEFTAINESS DROWNED.
BODY FOUND IN A DRAIN.
A Maori woman named Peti ; Herewini, sister of the late ' Major Te Wheoro, andi * chieftainess of her tribe, was found drowned in a drain near Mercer last Friday afternoon. /;" ; ■.. ' , ■'•'".;..
At an ■ inquest evidence was given to the effect that deceased was seen alone paddling against the stream and proceeding towards her whare, but later another Maori saw the body lying face downwards in the drain. A daughter of the deceased stated that the latter dined at her house about midday last Wednesday, and then proceeded on her way home in a. canoe the same afternoon. Medical evidence was to the effect that the
symptoms were consistent with accidental /drowning. . The body was fully dressed when found.
The jury brought in a verdict of drowning, "but. there is no evidence to show that it was otherwise than accidental."
