HOCKEY.

THE AUCKLAND ASSOCIATION. The various competitions under the Auckland Hockey Association were continued on Saturday afternoon, there being generally fair attendance on the various grounds. ; 'Seniors. ;; • ■ united V. PONSONBY. This match took place on the Domain, when one of the most friendly games of hockey eventuated, a notable feature of the game being the total absence of talking and rough play, making it a pleasant game for the referee (Mr. E. Haddeu) to control. Barry, for -United, and Murray, for Ponsonby, bullied off, and the ball rattled up and down the, field at a great pace, the first 10 minutes being of a very even nature. From a throw-in by Doyle, Miller passed the ball nicely to Barry at centre, a good shot by Barry resulting. The ball being set going again, Brown passed to Potter, the centre-hall:, who sent it out to Keeling, and he in turn centred, Barry scoring bis second goal. '• Shortly before the call of time, Morpeth, from a big scramble in the circle, scored a very pretty goal, the first spell ending in United 3 to Ponsonby's nil. The second spell was of a one-sided nature, the Fonsonbyites . appearing to bo all at sea, and the backs not being in their places, which allowed Porter to take the ball right toi the circle and score a goal. After this several goals were scored; Barry scored two in quick succession, then Morpeth scored his second ' goal. Young (the Pon-

St. George's on No. 2 ground, Remuera, and- after a very close game the red and blacks emerged victors by 3 goals to 1. ' The game was a very even one till a-quairter of an hour before time, when St.\ George's tired. Auckland notched two goals in quick succession. The red and blacks had a weak vanguard. ; Mason, at centre- scored all three goals ,and was in good form, and easily the best forward. Whitley, at centre-half, played an excellent game, and did a lot of stopping. For St. George's, H. Whyte and P. Steele were the mainstay of the rearguard. Tattley scored for St. George's by a very neat shot. The St. George's vanguard were very willing, but not scientific, and they hit much too hard. . ' v

JUNIORS.

The game between Training College and Ponsonby first juniors, played at Remuera, resulted in an easy win for Training College by 10 goals to Ponsonby's nil. . From the bully-off Hogan got possession, and hit out to the wing, but Training College relieved by a hard hit. This put Ponsonby on the defence, and Masefield scored. Shortly afterwards Training College again attacked, and Webster succeeded in putting the ball between the posts. Ponsonby took play into their opponents' territory, a free hit relieving the pressure. By bad fielding on Ponsonby's part, the ball was hit into the circle, and from , a scramble Training College scored their third goal. Shortly after the bully-oft* Training Collego again attacked, and by good centring Masefield, again scored, this being added to by another goal shortly before half-time. Hogan beat his opponent at the bully-off, and Ponsonby attacked, , but the defence was too sound. Webster hit out to the wing, and by a forward rush down the field the ball was eventually put through by Crisp. Training. College again returned to the attack, but offside play on their part spoilt a chance of ? scoring.' From a circle hit, Ponsonby ruined play up the field, but the College backs fielding returned to the attack, Crisp scoring. Training College's combination was now too good for their opponents, who were bunching too much, and the ball travelling into Ponsonby's circle, Masefield' scored. Offside play by* Training Collego relieved Ponsonby, but College cam© again, and shot two more goals in quick succession. •' United A v. Y.M.C.A. juniors, played at Remuera, and, after a fast game, the match resulted in a win for United A' by 7 goals to 3. The goals for United A were scored by Amos (4), Hamlyn (1),. and Johnson (2); and for Y.M.C.A. Noone (2), and Robinson (1). - For Y.M.C.A. the two fullbacks and centre-half and the t'wo inside forwards were the pick. The whole of the forward line must learn to ikeep their-places better, and the halves to feed their forwards before they can hope to win against strong opponents. For United A, Choyce, Carr, and Falconer were about the best of the backs. All the forwards' were good, the long passing; at times being quite brilliant. The match between Epsom and. College Rifles was played at Epsom on No. 1 ground. The game was well contested from start to finish, and resulted in favour of Epsom by four goals to their opponents' nil. The most prominent players for the winning team were Piper and Roberts (fullbacks), Becroft (centre-half), • and McCannon (left wing forward). The best among the losing team were Woodroffo (left wing forward), Cossett (centre-half), McDonald (right wing forward), Gresham. (fullback). Mr. Goldwater was referee. * - -' - ."•• ..■■.', "University beat Auckland B by"7 goals to nil.' ;' X ' V ■:"'■■', -
