GIS BORNE NEWS.
A MYSTERIOUS EXPLOSION. [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Gisborne, Friday. The sea had sufficiently subsided this afternoon to enable the loading of the Delphic and Niwaru to be commenced. The Herald's Port Awanui correspondent telegraphs that a Maori youth named Te Moana Taua met with a rather serious gun accident at Te Rahui yesterday evening. While taking a shotgun over a fence the weapon went off, and the whole charge entered Te Moana's hand shattering it badly. An inquest was held to-day, at Waerengaokuri, into the death of Patrick Walsh, who was found dead yesterday. Evidence was given as to the deceased having complained of ill-health, and statin* that a doctor had advised him to go to town. A verdict was returned of death from natural causes. During, the height of the storm about eight o'clock on Tuesday night a loud report, which closely resembled a dynamite explosion, was heard by many residents of the town. THe origin, so far, has remained a mystery. From inquiries it has been ascertained that the report was heard by the abattoir employees who declared it was very loud and was accompanied by a sharp shock. The report was also heard and felt at Turuheru freezing works, where. some coal was brought down in,the bunkers. . ■•
