THE GUARANTEE ASKED FOR REFUSED BY THE STATES. By Telegraph.—Press Association.— (Received Jane 1, 12,29 a.m.) /' "-'"''' :; " ; 3 ; Brisbane, ;; May ''-Sl.'-' •'- At the Premiers' Conference, to-day Sir John Forrest conveyed Mr. Bent's scheme for subsidising the mail syndicate. The proposalis that two or more States shall enter, into an agreement to guarantee "the debentureholders interest to the extent of £125,000 annually. ' ' ' The Conference, unanimously, .on the motion of Mr. Swinburne (Victoria), resolved, "That the States do not give the guarantee asked for, and urges the Federal Government to take immediate steps to arrange a satisfactory contract." - -
