TRAM ACCIDENT IN QUEENSTREET.
FIJIAN'S NARROW ESCAPE FROM DEATH.
A Fijian off the" Fijian Government steamer Banadi, now in port, had a miraculous escape from ''■ death through being knocked down by a tramcar in Queen-street, about Seven o'clock last evening. The accident occurred in front of the Herald office. The native, was walking up the street on one side of the tramline, and two of his compaions were on the other. In order to get out of the way of a couple, of cyclists approaching him, the Fijian moved on to.the tram track. Just at that moment the tram which runs along the Queen-street section only came along and struck the Fijian, and then dragged him several' yards.' Motorman L. Allen, who was in charge, applied the brakes, and pulled the car up within two or three lengths. i ••:■••}'.'. ■~"./■
The man was pinned down under the car. A large crowd soon gathered, and a number of willing hands helped to lift the car, which fortunately was one of the small ones in use. He was ' quicJly extricated from his dangerous position. A couple of doctors were soon on the scene, and it was ascertained that the injured man had sustained a severe scalp wound and sundry bruises and cuts, the flesh of his right leg being torn. No bones were broken. He was conveyed to the district hospital, being accompanied by Dr. Gore Gillon and his excited companions. ■:•■■■«
