THE RAND STRIKE.
OWNERS WELCOME THE STRUGGLE. AN OPPORTUNITY FOR ' RETRENCHMENT. By Telegraph.— Association.—Copyright. - Pretoria, May 30. Mr. George Albd, one of the- leaders of the German group of Rand mines, addressing the General Mining and Finance Corporation at Johannesburg yesterday, said the mine owners were prepared for aprolonged struggle in order to settle disputes with the miners once and for all. He had long realised that a large proportion of the miners were grossly inefficient, and that the number employed underground was excessive. They had been reluctant to discharge men in bad times, but the strike had removed the sentimental factor, and had afforded an opportunity for far-reach-ing reforms. He predicted that the mines in future will be run with from 15 to 20 per cent, fewer highlypaid labourers: If the struggle were prolonged Africanders would fill the places of the strikers as supervisors of the natives.
Mr. Albu is chairman and managing director of the General Mining and Finance Corporation of the Rand. He has lived in South Africa for thirty years.
