A meeting of tlio Mutual Improvement Association was • held on Tuesday, Mr. K. B.' Todd presiding. The programme consisted of short papers 011 various subjects, contributed by the members. The secretary read a paper entitled "The English in India," and Miss E. Robinson gave an essay on "The Organs of Sense." Mr. H. Andrew g{ive the Life of Richard Cobden," and Mr. H. Waddell dealt with I 'The Decline of the Maori," and the president's subject was "Football." All the papers reached a high standard of excellence, and gave rise to some interesting discussions.

The annual congregational social gathering of Holy Trinity parish took place on Wednesday, and was largely attended, the hall being decorated xfor the occasion. An excellent programme, consisting of a pianoforte duet by Mrs. and Mr. V. Morrin, songs by Misses Carson and Morrin and Messrs. F. Bullen and Guize, recitations by Mr. J. Ferguson, items by a quartette party, and a reading by the Rev. H. Mason, was provided. A short address- was given by the vicar, in which he reminded the parishioners that the church in Otahuhu was commencing its diamond jubilee, and lie thanked the . promoters of the recent minstrel entertainments, by means of which the restoration of the vicarage outbuildings had been carried out free of debt. Refreshments were handed round, and the hall was cleared for dancing. , . . The next meeting of the Progressive League, wbich takes place early next week, should be exceptionally interesting, as Mr. iJ. E. Taylor has accepted the invitation of the league to address the members upon I the subject of the Waitemata-Manukau Canal scheme. flic last meeting of the Mangere Mutual Improvement Society was well , attended, Mr. J. Montgomery presiding. The subject for the evening was u paper by Mr. C. W. Clarke 011 the "English Language," which was ably dealt with.
