CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

The meeting of the Chamber of Commerce Cbyncil- was held , yesterday, _ when . there were present: : Messrs. N.' A. Nathan (president); S. J. Nathan, G. L. Peacocke, M. M. McCallum, I. Evans, A. B. Robcrton, H. P. Oakdcn, J. B. Macfarlane, A. Hall, T. Peacock, W. Gunson, J. Reid, G. Aickin, and A. Burt, and the secretary, Mr. Denniston.

Auckland and "Westport: The secretary of ( the Westport Chamber of Commerce wrote suggesting ; that the Auckland Chamber j should f co-operate with the West Coast body in' endeavouring to induce the Union* S.S. Company to establish a* direct service between Westport and Auckland. The matter was referred to the Shipping Committee. Railway Matters: Messrs. Macky, Logan, Stee-n, and Co. wrote enclosing a letter Iromi a correspondent complaining that he was charged on ; the railway 2s oil a parcel because lie was a storekeeper, whereas any ordinary passenger was allowed to take-Tcwt of ccods free. Mr. McCallum wanted 't6 jknow why a storekeeper should be penalised iin Shis way: The president said he knew of jno railway in the world that allowed, pasisongors to carry goods or merchandise free. Mr. Evans moved, and it was agreed, that the secretary should interview the manager of railways and answer, the letter accordingly. A letter from Mr. S.vVailc upon railway administration generally was referred) to tho Railways Committee. . _ v Commercial Visitors: On the suggestion of Mr. Gunson it was resolved to communicate with the other Chambers of Commerce of the colony in regard to the proposed visit to Australia in 1909 of 100 members of the British Chambers of - Commerce and 100 members of tho Canadian and South, African Chambers in order that the visitors might .be fittingly received should they come to Now Zealand. •

Harbour Pilfering: , The ooncil considered, a letter from-the secretary to the Harbour Board referring to the resolution passed by the Board at a recent meeting that Mr. Napier, a member *of the Board, should bring the necessity for more police protection in the harbour under the notice of Ministers in Wellington.' The president suggested that in view of the promise of the Department to ' provide two additional police the letter should be received and the Board asked whether in its opinion the police protection proposed' would bo sufficient. This course was adopted. Annual Dinner: It was decided to hold tho annual dinner on the 25th pi-ox. New Member: Mr. C. P. Gardener, brick manufacturer and farmer, Grey Lynn, was elected a member "of tho Chamber.
