Ik the Police Court to-day, James Scott and George Mackintosh were each fined 40s and costs for exposing sheep' infested with lice at the Biirnside stock sales. Applications were received at the Harbour Board's meeting to-day, for the positions of harbourmaster, chief accountant, and junior pilot. It was resolved to send the applications to a committee to select four of the most eligible in each case, the names to be submitted to a special meeting of the Board next Tuesday. A Chinaman has been found dead in a cave at Conrop Gully, near Alexandra.; ? ' ( Wellington, Thursday. At the quarterly meeting of the . Canterbury Chamber of Commerce this afternoon resolutions urging the speedy completion of the Midland railway to tlio West Coast were passed. ; . Timaru, Thursday.
At a meeting of the committee in connection with the South Canterbury bay at the Exhibition a statement of : accounts was presented, showing the total cost of the bay to have been £1220. Local bodies contributed £1052, and business firms £76. Sales realised £72, and £60 was received as prize money. A credit balance of £40 remained in hand, and .it was resolved to use this in making presents to the secretary; Mr: R. L. Or bell, and to Mr. C. E. Bremner, ,who assisted in designing the i bay. v
