THE PRICE OF FLOUR.
A RISING MARKET.
ADVANCE TO £11 10s PER TON.
POSSIBLE FURTHER RISE IN
BREAD.
The principal topic of conversation in commercial circles during the past- few days has been the phenomenal increases in the price of flour. The price per ton on ■ Wednesday last was £11 locally, but it ■ was considered, in view of the firm at- • titude which was being taken by the holders of wheat in the South, that there i might possibly be further advances. This was borne out yesterday, when local mil- . lers raised the price from £11 to £11 10s : per ton, less uirual discount. Advices received from th« South also showed that millers there had further increased the price. The increase in the price of bread decided on by the bakers a, few days ago from 6d to 7d per 41b loaf, did not proVide for an increase in the price of flour beyond £11 per ton. and as this has ; now gone up to £11 10s, it is possible that a further advance in the price of bread j will be made. Speaking to. a well-known i baker last evening, a Herald reporter | was informed that it was likely that a further meeting would be held to consider the question of a further rise in the price of bread. So far as he recollected, the scale arrived at by the New Zealand Master Bakers' Association provided for an increase of J.d per 41b loaf for every £ the price of flour advanced beyond £11. If this is so, it is possible that the price of the 41b loaf, in view of the increase of*.flour to £11 10s per ton, may now be raised to 7 id.
