THE UREWERA COUNTRY.
For very many years there has been a strong belief that there is gold in the Urewera- Country, but the opposition of native owners, and the impossibility of arriving at conclusive titles, have prevented any searching explorations. The work of the Appeal Commission, appointed to finally settle the ownership problems and to provide for alienation to the Crown or ' as mining concessions, is at last completed. Titles covering three-quarters of a million acres have been settled, and the Native Minister states that the way is now clear to the throwing open of "a portion of the district" to prospectors. While a somewhat disappointing experience prevents the public from ; expecting any very great activity in the Native Department, and moderates any anticipation that the best of the ; Urewera Country may be speedily dealt with, we must suppose that a decided step has been made, and that prospectors will soon be able to get to .work, though upon limited areas. This itself is a great advantage, for if the results of such prospecting are encouraging, it will be very hard for the Government to resist the feeling that will at once be aroused among those interested in the gold mining j industry. ■ i
