SEAMEN'S WAGES CASE.

Whangarei, Tuesday.
At the Police Court to-day, before .the Mayor and Mr. Thompson, J.P.'s, William ' Cousins, master of ; the barque ; lotas, was charged ■: with a breach of .the Merchant Shipping Act by refusitigvtp. pay Patrick . Fitzpatrick ; the rate of 'wages due ,to f him as a labourer, .at 10s v a day.. The, evidence ..; showed that the. complainant had . been- engaged by Mr. Grant, of the ; Auckland Sailors'/ Home, as an A.B. for the barque Pelotas, then lying at Whangaroa, , on the understanding ; that the vessel was ,ready for sea. ~On I. arrival claimant found the barque not ready, and he held that the delay occasioned him loss of other work, '. and", claimed at the rate of 10s a day as an ordinary labourer, he not being on the ship's articles as an A.B. He also claimed 10s for steamer fare. The defendant said that Fitzpatrick had joined the ship as an , A.B. at £4 10s a month. After hearing the evidence of the second mate and an A.B. engaged on, the vessel, the Bench gave judgment for 10s, the steamer fare, against defendant, and also the £10 previously paid into Court by him. Each side was ordered to ;: pay their own costs, the ' Court', costs going against defendant. ~,
