CAMBRIDGE.
This first meeting of the newly-elected Road Board wan held on Saturday last, Mr. R. Swayne being elected chairman. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the retiring chairman (Mr. .Tame? Taylor) for the valuable services he had rendered in'the work of the Board. Application was made by Mr. Bvcroft tor permission to take gravel from the? Board's pits on payment of the usual royalty. It was decided not to sell any more gravel and to prosecute anyone taking it. Mr. J. D. P. Morgan presented a petition, signed by several ratepayers, asking the Board to take the necessary steps to have all the obstructions removed from the roads running through the properties of Messrs. Eigood, Main, and Bay. Consideration of the matter was deferred till next meeting. Only one tender was received for putting in concrete pipes under Gay's Gully. The amount (£ll2 15») was considered excessive and the work was postponed for a time. ■..■■"■■
TE AWAMOTU. The annual ball : in connection with tins Te Awainutu Public Library took place on Friday evening last. The music was supplied by Mr. Booth's Hamilton orchestra,-'and the floor was in capital order. The ladies provided the supper and a word of praise is dive to Mrs. Frank wood, who worked most indefatigably for the success of the function. ; ■■■'.•■.., ■■■-
Telephone offices have 1 been opened at' Oparure, Aria, Mairoa, and AVaitomo Caves, all situated in the King Country. These places are connected with the Te Awamutu office, which now. transmits telegraph business for no less than 13 sub-offices.
-. .- * EAST. TAMAKJ. - A meeting of the East Tamaki householders wan held on Monday, by order of the Board of Education. Two nominations for the chairmanship, those of Messrs. McLarin and Frost, were received, and a vote of the meeting resulted in favour of Mr. Frost. -A report was read by Mr. Harris, and nominations were made for a new committee. 12 being ;received. The election resulted in the return of Messrs. Cryer, Thompson, Neiile, Porter, Douglas, Fairburn, and Frost. Mr. Frost was subsequently elected chairman and Mr. Thompson! secretary and treasurer. Mr. Samuel Douglas, an old and respected settler of East Tamaki, passed away on Monday. Deceased leaves a large family, some of whom are married and living in this district.
