CHURCH OF ENGLAND TEMPER- ■;■;, ANCE SOCIETY. "

A meeting of the committee of the council of the diocesan Church of England Temeprance Society was held at the diocesan office, the Bishop presiding. Mr. Hartwell's resignation of the office of secretary was received with regret, and Mr. C. Hudson was appointed in his place. Messrs. Speight and Hudson were appointed as a sub-committee to draw up a circular to all the vicars of parishes in the Auckland district, asking if ,they would take steps to have a branch of the society established in their parish. The affiliation fee for all branches was fixed at 5s yearly. The names of several gentlemen willing to act on deputations were noted.

BIRKDALE LITERARY SOCIETY. The fortnightly meeting of the Birkdale Literary and Debating Society was held in the local schoolroom on Saturday evening, there being a good attendance. The evening was devoted to the reuding of humorous . sketches. Among the authors chosen were Dickens and Artemus .Ward. Those who contributed were Messrs. J. Hadfield, R. Jones, T. Schofield, F. Osmond, and Wolstenholme. The chairman, Mr. J. Brook, also gave a number of interesting items from his scrapbook.

". BIRKENHEAD QUOIT CLUB. : The Birkenhead Quoit Club held their first annual social on Saturday evening in the local Foresters' Hall. An excellent programme was .: presented, songs being rendered by Messrs. Buckton, Rennie,. Griffiths, Ferguson, Rose, Grant, Woolley, and 1 McLean, reoitations by Messrs. Taylor and Phail, and selections on the gramaphone by Mr. Pugh. MAYFIELD IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY. The fortnightly meeting of the Mayfield Improvement Society was hold in the Mayfield schoolroom on Saturday evening, the president (Mr. F. Wheeler) presiding. An interesting debate took place on the question as to whether co-operation in trade was preferable to competition. Mr. G. Wilson took the affirmative, and Mr. A. M. Wilson the negative side, both being supported by other speakers. On a vote being taken on the issues there was a majority of nine votes in favour of co-operation. i
