[BY TELEGRAPH.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] , Paeroa, Monday. A meeting of the Paeroa branch of the; Farmers'- Union was' held on Saturday, night, i Word was received from the Hon. W. Jones and Mr. W. F. Massey (Leader of the Opposition), stating that owing to the near approach of the session they would probably he unable to accept the invitation to visit the district. It was decided to petition Parliament, protesting against the deposit of mining debris in the river, and to send - delegates to Wellington to give evidence before the MinesCommittee in connection with the matter.; It was decided to ask the following to obtain signatures to the petition, and collect subscriptions to pay the expenses of the delegates' to Wellington:jSTetherton, Mr. S. J. Laughlin;'.-'-.', Paeroa,- Messrs.' W. Moore and S. Craig; Hikutaia, Mr. Alley; - Turua, Mr. R. W. Bagnall; Omahuv Mr. S. Bax; Matakoe, Mr. J. Clarke; Kopu, Mr. J. Williams;Te Aroha, Mr. F. Strange; Thames, Mr. W. Scott. Reference was made to the. need for a clubroom for the union, and Mr. S. Craig was appointed to confer with the Agricultural and Horticultural Society, and see .if the two bodies could obtain a' room jointly. Jack Clarke, the Maori boy ' who attempted to save a schoolmate from drowning in the Ohinemuri River, some time ago, has been presented with a silver watch and chain 'from the Paeroa people, in recognition of his bravery.. - ' At the examination held in connection with the ladies' nursing classes, under the Paeroa branch of the St. John Ambulance Association, all the candidates but one were successful. ; Mesdames, Pennell and Brunskill, and Misses McCallum, McGeehan and Smith passed in the nursing class, and Mesdames Craig, Hanna, and McAndrew and' Misses Brunskill, Campbell, Forrest, Kenny, McAndrew, and Shaw passed in the nursing course in the first class. .
