FIRE AT BAU,
HANGING OF A MURDERER.
The Union Company's steamer Talune, which arrived from Fiji yesterday, brought Suva papers up to May 22, from which the following items are gleaned
As a result of a fire at Ban, 21 native houses were destroyed, including two of: the Roko's. It is supposed to have started by children playing with fire. Unfortunately, niost of the male adults of the , island, were on the mainland attending their! cultivations, and the natives are reported! to have lost most of their belongings. J
The Indian criminal, ''Mohan,' who Was sentenced to death at the; last criminal sessions of the. Supreme Court for the murder of one Manbalioti, at Penang, on December 8, was hanged at the Suva Gaol. Fiji, on May 21, death being instantaneous. ' — '~;. '....':; , , ~',''.. ■ "■" A statement of accounts showing the receipts and expenditure in connection with the introduction of 2273 East Indian immigrants in 1906 is published in the Royal Gazette of the 17th instanti .The cost per head is a fraction of a penny over £16,0s 2d. The whole expenditure amounted to £36,392 8s sd. It may be mentioned that the cost of similar immigrants for. 1905 amounted to a, fraction of a penny over £18 4s 7d; so that the immigrants imported in 1906 cost £2 ,4s 5d less than those of 1 the. previous year. Messrs. Crosse and Kennedy, of Hawke's Bay (N.Z.), who some little time ago acquired an interest in landed estate in the colony, and are. planting rubber, arrived at Suva by the Talune. Mr. Kennedy took a consignment of the flax plants of New. Zealand with him, with the view of finding Out if they will take to Fiji.; :
