A UNITED meeting of Good Templars wa» held in the Queon's Hall, Pugot-strect, last Thursday-, ovening, to welcome the xnx&l members of the order from Trafalgar I»A§t. ; (H.M.s. Powerful) and Naval Star of Au* tralasia (H.M.s. Encounter). _ There • wert about 200 meml>erH present, and an enjoyable- musical programme- was rendered by Brothers Gutnmer, Simmonds, Truman, McVittie, Bradley, Ursliart, Orr, and Sis. ter Balchin. ' WESLEY GUILD CONVENTION. . The first workers' convention in conneo* : tion with the Devonport and Birkenhead ;: Wesley Guilds was held on Friday afternoon at Birkenhead. Mr. E. Roberta, mx behalf of .-the' Birkenhead Guild, extended a welcome to the ■ ..visitors..■■. The ■, Rev. ,8. , Griffith (president' of the Devonport Guild) ;■;<•■; presided. The afternoon session was taken up by the reading and- discussion of papers . on "The Relationship of the Guild to the Church," ? and' " How Wo Can Secure the Best" Efficiency of Our Guild," contributed by Miss Arinitage and Mr. E. Roberts. Thft :' following v resolution . was '■' carried:—"That' ■ r : inquiries ho made as to how : many guilds there are in Now ; Zealand, so that step* may bo taken to amalgamate and form » Wesley Guild Union." Tea was served by the ladies of the local guild,' after ; which tho Rev. G. S. Cook (president of the Bir-; :\ .'■ kenhead Guild) presided over a public meeting, at which there was a good attendanceA paoer entitled, •'The Wesley Guild: .What Is It?" was read by Mr. Hex Coot Addresses were delivered by tho cbairmta and Mr. 0. Paterson (vice-president of the Birkenhead Guild). Musical items etc., weft contributed by , Misses Whiter, Chamber.. lain, Clow, Blackvvall, Lock, Jones, and Patrick. BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH. COUNCIL. The Works and Finance' Committee of' the Birkenhead Borough Council met. oh - Friday evening. The' Mayor; (Mr. Alex. , Keyesj presided. V; The ; sanitary inspector, was instructed to make' a monthly ; inspec- >v tion of houses in the borough, and to prose-' cute those householders who fail to keep their drains in proper order. The Mayor reported that Eskdale Road was in such * ;. bad state that it would'be wasting money repairing it at present.' The question of repairing the road was deferred till the ~ summer. An amendment, moved by Mr. .;,. Taylor, " That i tho road be closed "pending ;; repairs," was lost. On tho motion of the ; Mayor, it was decided to spend £200- in metalling the roads this season;as follows:-* £100 for 2in metal for patching, and £100 for 24in, to bo distributed in lots of 72yd»,-, for the Nortbcote Road, 60yds for the Birdale Road below Wallace's Hill to Jcssup ■» gate, and 35yds on tho Lake Road (half the cost to be borne by the Waitemata ' ' County Council. A concert (the proceeds .of which goto* . . wards the liquidation of the debt owing on the building) was' held on Friday evening • _ in the Northcote Parish Hall. A lengthy programme arranged by the ladies of the , • Guild was carried out. The Rev. A. t< Smith (vicar) occupied the chair. A laugh-, able charade in three acts entitled, "A' : " dote," was acted by Misses Duncan and #~. Shortridge. Messrs. A. Harrison , and b. . Hunt caused a'great deal of merriment. Other items were: Mandolin solo, M™. Shortridge; song, Mr. Fogerty; duet, Mrs. Duncan and Miss Thompson; recitation, "A Timelv Hint," Master Bertie MeClyniont; song," Miss Alice Xutsoy: quartette, Messrs. A. and C. Bartley, Fogerty, and Way; 'cello solo, Mr. A. W.Whiter;, pianoforte solo, Mrs. Brooking; song, Mr. Feltham; trio, "A Little Farm Well filled," Messrs. C. Hartley, Feltham, and «»>'• An address on Empire. Day was delivered, bv the Rev. W. J. Monckton, M.A. A tableau, "Britannia and Her Daughters-, with the national costumes, was depicted by the following girls of. Mrs. A. Taylors class:—Connie Cadness, E. Mills, tWrightson, K. Simpkin, Z. Taylor, W. Whatford, A. Hunt, and N. Whatford. The Pennsylvania railroad proposes to substitute all-steel for wooden passenger M cars on its entile system. This enterprise . will involve a tremendous investment ft|j money and the relegation of a vast amount, r of rolling stock to inferior uses or to toj>. scrap heap. It is proposed to construct 2000 all-steel passenger cars within *tae. next two years, and 200 are to be built immediately.
