| HALFPENNY RIDES V IN QUEEN- ,, , ' . STREET. - -■ ,' - At the meeting of the City Council , yesterday :. it was , reported; that Mr.' P; M. Hansen, managing' director of : the Auckland Electric, Tramways .Company, had written intimating the, intention, "of his company to' iristal ■an additional set of boilers in the company's ' power station, and to add an additional 600 kilowatt set, i.e., .1000 h.p., to.the power station. Mr.' Hansen also stated that, in j order to remove any apprehension on the! part of the public travelling in : small airs, the doors leading from the inotormari's platform on small cars, would be fastened from the inside, • so that they could be readily opened from within in case of emergency. { . THE; QUEEN-STREET TRAFFIC. The crossover laid down at the. Welles-ley-street corner of Queen-street would, Mr. Hansen added, be a permanent one, and lie suggested that a few cars., should be started, from that corner for the five o'clock traffic, to enable people employed •in . the neighbourhood -■ to secure accommodation with'less trouble than hitherto. He also suggested that one car be run up and down i Queen-street, between Wellesleystreet and _ Custom-street, at halfpenny per fare until repairs to the track are completed." . ;• ; The, Mayor said he saw no objection to two cars Wing ran in Queen- provided' the company did so at their own risk ; a.t the same time, if any perron on-paring a penny insisted upon being conveyed by another car. to: the end of the pansy sections, they w6uld .be entitled to bo so Conveyed. He thought the matter should be referred to the Finance Committee. Mr. A. J. Emtricari believed it would be in tike . interests of the public desiring to travel in Queen-street. "With regard to the proposal to start ;cars from the > corner of; Wellesley-street, lie thought that the company should start them from opposite the Ton son Garlick Cd.'s premises . in Upper Queen-street. ; • .; * • Mr. Tudehope lioped ■ that the Council would assure itself of "the practicability ?of the proposed J halfpenny journey, £ considering that the" company said they could - not grant transfers to other ears. The Coun- i cil had had a. good deal of trouble with, the lYamways Company in. one way and another, J arid they '..required ito be very. careful in' these, matters. "* Mr. Somers: "I understand this arrangement is only for three weeks." The Mayor: "That is so." - Mr. Tudehope observed that he only wished the . Council to safeguard itself..' .". V The letter was referred to the Finance Committee. - - ■ . ; ROLLING STOCK. . In regard to the intimation of the company that, a cable had been received advising the shipment of four complete car equipments, the city engineer was instrticted ' by the Finance Committee to report upon* the sufficiency or otherwise of the ■ company's rolling stock, moro especially in view' of the proposed; extensions- to Mount Eden and Mount Roskill. A JURY'S RECOMMENDATION. The Finance Committee reported on a letter from the -City. Coroner forwarding jury riders to the effect:—(l) "That the Council; be asked to take such action as will prevent high' rates of speed: by tramcars in the' busiest parts of the city and suburbs;',' (2) " That the Council be requested to discontinue the use of salt water on tramlines." ■ The committee recommended that a .reply' 'be;' sent to the effect that with regard to" the use of . salt water, the Council had entered into an. agreement with the Tramways Company for the watering of the streets by electric car sprinkler, in which it was probable only fresh water would be used. ', " The Public Works Department also wrote urging that the'use of salt water be entirely discontinued jr confined to fie sides of streets. ■; v _ 1 The report was adopted.'
