j TRANSFERRED TO NATIVE 'RULER. By Telegraph.—-Press Association.— Calcutta, May 22. Manipub, a State in North-eastern India, which has been under the direct control of the Indian Government since the massacre of British officials in 1891, has now been transferred to the native ruler.
The Manfpur insurrection took place in March, 1891. Mr. Quinton, Chief Commissioner of Assam, went to Manipur with an escort of 400 Ghoorkas, to inquire into the deposition of the Rajah by the hill tribes. On March 23 the escort was attacked. After fighting till all ammunition was gone, the Commissioner and the officers, of . the Ghoorkas were made, prisoners. Over 300 of " the " escort were killed. Before the attack on the party, Lieutenant Grant with 80 Ghoorkas had left Tamu for Manipur. A force of 4400 Manipuris with two guns attacked a fort he was "holding, and was [repulsed with considerable loss. Mr. Quinton and the other prisoners were massacred. Three columns were sent to Manipur to rescue the prisoners and punish the rebels, but on their getting to the city they found the prisoners had been beheaded and the city sacked, and the magazine blown up. The leading rebels "were afterwards punished, and since then British officials haye.exercised the govern- , ing powers.
