AUCKLAND RACING CLUB. 1 REVISION" OF RULES. A special general meeting of members of the : Auckland Racing Club wa» heid in the Chamber ; of Commerce, Swanson-atreet, yesterday afternoon , for the, purpose of considering the new rules as drafted and circulated. There was a good attendance. Mr. N. A. Nathan was elected to the chair in the absence of the president (the Hon. E. Mitchelson). The rules were taken seriatim. Referring to Rule 4, which provides that " the number of members shall not exceed 250 (subject to the rights of present members)," Mr. W. E. Hackett said he took it that under this rule no ordinary decent member of the community could become a member of . the Racing Club at any time that it suited him. The Chairman : Not while 250 member# exist. / \ Mr. Hackett said that if this rule was . passed it would mean that these 250 members would become the owners of the whole of the club's pro- ■ perty. ; The Chairman: There are only about 230 members at present. We 'have room for 20 more. Mr. Hacketb moved, "That the rule be deleted," : but the motion lapsed for *sint of a. seconder, and the rule was passed. Mr. Hackett recorded his personal protest against it, holding that it: was inimical to the interests of the club and racing.: A good deal of discussion took place over rule 27, which provided that the president and vicepresident should be chosen by the committee at. their first meeting after the 'annual meeting. Dr. Shaman moved, "That the words 'out of their number' bo inserted after the word 'committee.' " : ■ The motion was seconded. Mr. F. Earl submitted that the president and vice-president should be elected by the members of the club, 1 and not bv the committee. He moved as an amendment, That rales 27 and 28 be amended so as to read as follows:— The office-bearers shall be a president, a vice-presi-dent, three trustees, -and a committee; eruch com-mil-fee to consist, of the president and vice-presi-dent: ex officio, and 10 members elected as hereinafter provided. The president and vice-president all all be elected annually. The trustees shall j continue in office until removed by death, resignation, resolution of a general meeting, or otherwise, but any office-bearer ceasing to be a member of the club shall ipso facto cease to be an office* bearer. (28) At every annual meeting five members of the committee (not being ex officio mem- ; bers), being those who have been longest in office without re-election, shall retire, but shall be eligible for re-election, and the vacancies so oc--1 curring shall be filled up. The present committee i shall retain office until the next annual meeting, . when the five members longest in office shall retire." Mr. Hackett seconded the amendment. ' Dr. Sharman said there was a possibility that if the president was elected by members the wrong man might be -placed in the position, whereas this would he obviated if the election were by the committee. i The amendment, on being put, was carried. > Several of the remaining rules were altered so as to Jit in with the alteration. > Rule 41 was altered so as to provide for the i election of "not less than five stewards and not more than, nine," as ret out.
