' The claims of this distinctively New Zealand mission upon the support of the public increase in urgency. The Southern Gross is thia year beginning a system .of thro© voyages instead or two, and this alone will mean bringing up the annual cost of the mission ship to £0000. It is estimated that the Melanesia!) Mission -spends' some £8000 in the Auckland shops every year. "This fact, writes' the Bishop of Auckland, •; " snould appeal to ■ the mercantile community.- But there are two higher and better appeals to ' all of us: "'■ (a) The Christian necessity of extending to others what we. so richly enjoy ourselves ; (b) the national glory belonging to New, Zealand through the names of tho two Selwyns, Patteson, and the other heroes: of faith.". -;>; '
