THE NEWFOUNDLAND FISHERIES.
SIR R. BOND'S PROTEST.
NO FRICTION AT THE CON.
FERENCE.
By . Telegraph.Press j Association.-— - London, May IS. With reefrence to the rumour that there had been a sharp passage •at the Imperial Conference between the Premier of Newfoundland and Lord Elgin, the former (Sir ; Robert Bond), in an interview, has; stated: " I received the most respectful hearing from the members of the Government at the Conference, and most sympathetic support from other Premiers. The Imperial Government did not meet Newfoundland's reasonable demands, but I ■ hope they will use the best 5 endeavours to undo the mischief which the vivendi has occasioned. I tyust the embarrassment and humiliation ' which ! the colony has been subjected to will not be repeated by the renewal of the arrangement." He added that the vivendi had led to a disregard by fishermen of Newfoundland's constituted authorities, and he was deeply .; disappointed at the result of his appeal for justice.
The agreement- between ; Great Britain and the United States setting aside for the season of Newfoundland's fishing regulations was mad© under pressure from Washington. The American Government claims that under treaty rights American fishermen may take bait within Newfoundland's territorial waters without paying a ■ lioenso fee. The British Foreign Office entered into the vivendi for the season to give time, for the examination of the American claims. ; Had this not been done a serious crisis, according to Sir Edward Grey, would have been created. ,:.:;:■ .-,.>'^-.■:■; ■ ■ -■
