THE LONDON POLICE.
ANOTHER BLUNDER.Once more the London police, writes out
London correspondent, usually so careful I and efficient, have been perpetrating an
astounding and scandalous blunder."
lady was waiting in Regent-street, at the' corner of Air-street -a dubious Ice
cality— a late hour in the evening, eiIpectant of a husband and omnibus. She' was suddenly pounced upon by the police, accused of "disorderly conduct," •anci,.deepite her protestations, was promptly 1 hauled off to durance vile. Next morning she was brought before a magistrate, and some distinctly "bard swearing" was indulged in by the arresting constables, whose superior officers, however, tlirew them overboard, and admitted that a w'rious and' indefensible mistake had been committed. The lady was instantly re- • leased without a stain on her character, ', with profuse apologies from the Bench T| and the police for the infamous treatment '" to which, she had so . unwarrantably been subjected. ■ I am glad to say, however, '-; that her justly indignant husband has on- „?- nounced Ms intention of taking the matter farther;-.and of leaving no stone vnUtmeii m to . obtain,'; redress for a monstrous and in- '. | defensible outrage. It is just as well that !'• New Zealand ladiesas I was compelled to suggest in reference to a previous case of this kind—should carefully note this ( case, and take warning that according to present practice if they are seen waiting ■. for a husband; or an omnibus anywhere ia |? the neighbourhood of Regent-street, Airstreet, or Piccadilly ' Circus late in the ;' evening, they render themselves ipso facto * liable to be thus' infamously, treated'by unscrupulous members of the police force - eager to secure promotion for zeal. It is ', not a... pleasant possibility, but ; ; there it ■■' stands. * • - '
