MILITAEY HOAXED.
The Paris, military authorities were made the victims of a belated First of April joke. During the afternoon and evening of April 3, a strong detachment of mounted troops reported themselves for duty to the officers of the various police stations. They said they had com© in, connection with-the bakers' .strike. The; police officials replied that ■> there was no.- bakers' strike, and then rang .- up headquarters to demand an explanation. , The prefect of polico telephoned to General Dalstein, the Military Governor of Paris, but lie knew nothing of the matter, and the troops were, all ordered back to barracks at once. ■■ ■
An inquiry is being held. One version given is that someone blundered and misread an order that directed men to be held in readiness should the bakers cease work. Another,, and more likely explanation is that a practical joker personating the Under/ Secretary for War telephoned instructions to the headquarters of .the military governor directing., that bodies of cavalry should be sent to the different.police. stations...
