WEDNESDAY UNION'S OPENING MATCHES. . The' opening matches of the Wednesday' Af ternoon> Rugby Union-took place at Alexandra Park yesterday, when the first round of the president's cup competition was commenced.-Tim weather was beautifully fine and tlio attendance large. Mr. George Tutt, the donor of the president's cup, performed the opening ceremony; in connection with the inauguration of the season by .'kick-, ing off in the Post, Telegraph, and Railway match (played in front of the stand)'amidst 'applause.' Both isenior games gave line to; interesting contests, which augurs well for the-success of the season. Results:— - . • -

Post, Telegraph, and Railway v. Grocers and Milkmen 1 : This match was played on No. 1 ground, Mr/McGregor ofiiciatiiijj'as referee. The Grocers and Milkmen won the toss and immediately after the kick-off J worked play into the - enemy's '25, where give-and-take play followed for some time. From a scrum Little secured the ball, and sending.' it on to Edwards the latter made a nice opening and transferred to Caselton, who ran from his own 25 and scored a brilliant try, which Howard converted: Civil Servants 5, Grocers and Milkmen nil. The game now opened up and good play was shown by both sides. From a scrambling rush the ball came lout' to Hunt, who made a short dash and then handed the leather to Stanley, who scored a try, from which uo goal resulted: Civil Servants 5, Grocers and Milkmen 3. No other score resulted during this spell. On play resuming the 'Civil- Servants' backs commenced to throw the ball about with good results, Edwards opening the ■ account by scoring a fine try: Civil Servants 8, Grocers and Milkmen 3. :■ Soon afterwards Edwards again got over, followed by Caselton, and, another try was scored before time, which , found the scores: Post, Telegraph, and Railway 17, Grocers and Milkmen 3. Butchers v. Drapers Combined Team.:". Though lacking the brilliancy of the other, senior match, this was a decidedly .interesting contest. Play was. almost entirely confined to the forwards, and half-way through the first spell the Butchers' forwards worked ; the ball over the line. Cooper scoring. : . The . try was . not converted : Butchers 3, Drapers nil. Almost immediately afterwards the Drapers got over, but failed to. add the major points, leaving the scores equal,' at which they remained until half-time.; The second half was occupied; again with forward play, in which the Drapers' pack showed to more advantage than in the first half. Well on in the game the Butchers lost' a good' chance of scoring and the Drapers turning - defence into .attack were > enabled to score, Ellis getting . over the line. The try was not converted:. Drapers 6, Butchers 3. From this on the Butchers made desperate attempts to equalise matters, but were not successful, and the whistle blew, leaving the Drapers- victorious by 6 points to 3—the first win they have recorded since 1904.' Mr. F. S. Murray refereed. „ ■; Junior Grade: The Post, Telegraph and. Railway team played a drawn game -with- the Grocers and Milkmen,- each side scoring :.3 points. Mitchell scored for Hie Civil ; Servants and Allen for the Grocers and Milkmen. -':. Neither tries were converted. Mr. G. Nicholson refereed. The Butchers team played the Drapers and after a hard game the latter * team" won -by "an unconverted try to nil."; Mr. George Champion refereed. ;., '<■~.■.;,;.
