[TRANQUILITY IN PUNJAB. I SITUATION IN BENGAL STRAINED. By Telegraph.—Press Association.— London, May 14. In the House of Commons yesterday Mr. Morley stated, in reply to Mr. Balfour, that the measures taken in the Punjab had sufficed for the maintenance of tranquility. The situation in Eastern Bengal was, however, i strained, and the Hindoo agitators were violently attempting to compel the Mahommedans to abstain from purchasing British goods in the markets. - "Great unrest continues," said the Secretary of State, "hence a new ordinance has been promulgated to regulate public meetings and prevent, seditious speeches. These ordinances are considered absolutely necessary for the public safety." Mr. Morley intimated, in reply to Mr. W. Redmond, that it was inopportune to discuss the subject alluded to by the member for East Clare now, lest agitators in India should see that the House -of Commons was divided on the matter. The Allahabad correspondent of the London Daily Telegraph says the firmness of the Secretary for India (Mr. John Morley) is having a salutary effect on the agitators. ; . Calcutta, : May 14. The seditious leader Lajpatra has j been sent to Mandalay, where 42; other political prisoners also have been sent for detention for other offences.
