MERIT REWARDED.

[By. SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT.]

Messrs. R. 0. Clark, drain-pipe manufacturers, of Custom-street West, Auckland: have been awarded the Special Gold Medal for earthenware, drain-pipes and junctions, also bends, cesspits, syphons, potstands, umbrella stands, etc., at the International Exhibition, held at Chriatchurch.

The exhibit of this well-known local firm met with considerable opposition at the Exhibition, for it was placed in competition with the best manufactures of makers from all parts of the colony, and those who visited the Exhibition well remember the very excellent display made by Messrs. R. O. Chirk in the machinery hall. Their display was a. most interesting ob-ject-lesson to those interested in the fostering and growth of important local industries, for here one could see an astonishing variety of earthenware manufacture, not only of all sizes of drain-pipes, junctions, bends, cesspits, syphons, etc., but such! articles as chimney pots, cowls, umbrella stand*, potstands, and fancy pottery for private and public garden*; the exhibit also included the Smith's Patent Detached Locking Socket for glazed earthenware pipe, for which Messrs. E. 0. Clark hold the solo patent rights for New Zealand. Enough has been said to show the ecopa of Messrs. R. 0. Clark's undertaking, save* the important fuel that there is a steady and increasing demand for- their goods all over the colony, in the Pacific Islands, and in India.

The high standard of manufacture maintained by this firm baa not been emphasised, because the verdict of the Exhibition judges speaks fur itself, and we, may add that the only prize and gold medal awarded for glazed socket pipes, bend.-;, junction*, syphons, and cesspits was awarded to Messrs. R. 0. Clark at the Auckland Exhibition, 1898 and '99, against all comers* local and otherwise.
