WHANGAREI BOROUGH COUNCIL.

WHANGAREI, Tuesday. AT a special fleeting of the Borough Council yesterday, a. petition signed by 95 ratepayers praying the Council to constitute the Whanfrarei Borough into a fire district, thus transferring the control of the brigade from the Council to the Government, was presentcd by Mr. Roberts. The Mayor having: pointed out. that the petition complied with the provision of the Act (which stipulated that the signatures of 15 per cent, of the ratepayers should be attached) it was resolved to move in the direction of taking a poll as soon as possible. Mr. Dent moved. "That a new returning officer be appointed for the municipal election." Mr. Mann seconded the mo.ion. The Mayor said the motion was rather too late, as the returning officer had already discharged part of his duties. The motion was lost, the mover and seconder only supporting it.
