Signer Caruso earned the sum of £33.000 during the opera season in America last winter. It is said thai, he gets £300 anight when appearing at Covent Garden.
Father Bernard Vauglran is the twelfth child in a family of 14*. He has live brothers who are priests, and thought of joining the army before lie ultimately decided to enter the Church.
Mr. Cornelius Vandcrbilt, the American millionaire, who is bringing over so many of his celebrated horses to compete in the Horse Show at Olympia, has a piano which cost £3000. while the music-stool for this instrument is valued at £400.
The Right Hon. James Bryce, who has been appointed British Ambassador at Washington, was the first Englishman to reach the top of Mount Ararat. Mountaineering is his chief hobby, and lor many years he was the president ot the Alpine Club.
Mr. Harry Randall, the comedian, was apprenticed to a seal engraver, and worked up a nice little business of his own by the time he was 21. But comic songs appealed to him more than bis ordinary business, so he decided to abandon the business in favour of the profession. His first public appearances were made in concert rooms attached to public-houses and in the lesser known halls of the East End.
Mr. George Bernard Shaw seems to be the Whiteley of literature—a universal provider of all sorts of prose. His services are not only in requisition as a preacher, but as a writer of prefaces and prologues. In addition to writing the prologue for the opening ceremony at the " Playhouse" (Mr. Cyril Maude's new theatre) he has written the preface to the catalogue of the Modern Photography Exhibition at the galleries of the new English Art Club. It is freely stated that Mr. Shaw is one of four or five literary men earning £10.000 a year. On his own confession he often makes £300 a week. Mr. J. M. Panic is credited with heading the list of money-makers in literature and drama, followed by Mr. Pinero ami Mr. Hall Cainc. Miss Mark- Corelli is at the top of the ladies' list.
