Hokitika, Saturday. An- elderly woman named Mrs. Swaine has been missing for some days. A young man named Henry Feeney, aged 25, is also missing, and it is feared both have been drowned in the Hokitika River.

Invkrcargill, Sunday.

The number of bankruptcies in 'the Invercargill district during the quarter just ended was four, two less than in the March quarter of 1906.

The rent from the Municipal Theatre since opened is £468 6s 4d. The Mayor estimates tha* if things go on as prosperously as they now appear, the undertaking will cost the ratepayers practically nothing next year, when revenue from Victoria Hall, municipal offices, and marked reserve are taken into account.

Dunkdik, Saturday. A conference of delegates from Waihemo, Waikouaiti, and Waitaki County Councils was held to-day, at Palmerston, to consider motor by-laws. There is provided a speed restriction of six miles per hour at all indicated dangerous places, and drivers of ears may be called on to stop altogether when meeting or passing drovers, vehicular, or horse traffic. This will affect running considerably between Dunedin and Christchurch. The by-law will probably be confirmed by the Councils. The Star understands thai Mr. Donald Reid, solicitor, of Milton, a former member for Bruce, will contest that seat with Mr. James Allen at the general election.

Blenheim, Saturday. A house of eight rooms in tlio main street, occupied by K. Priddle, was destroyed by tire last night. Very little was saved. The insurances were £250 on the building in the North British, £150 on the furniture in the Sun Office, and £50 on the piano in the Sun.

G'hri.stchurch. Saturday. The Grand Lodge of Templars closed hist night. Tho business was mostly formal.

A special committee has been appointed by the City Council to consider the best means of improving the supply of electricity to Christchurcn. The committee visited Waimakariri River, and inspected the proposed intake for water supply, and the site suggested for the power plant. The committee will report early. A large party of railway traffic managers, engineers, and representatives of the Tourist Department will visit Hiuinier, in connection with the proposed motor service. It is understood that a move will bo made to have the service in operation at as early a date as possible. The girl Williams, who attempted to commit suicide yesterday, came before the Court this morning She stated that her father was very religious, and objected to her going to the music hall and the theatre. She suffered from asthma, and was miserable. The father said that no friction existed between him and his daughter. The magistrate remanded the girl for a week. ChristchurcH, Sunday.

The North Canterbury Infantry Battalion and Ordnance Corps held a largely attended church parade at the Anglican Cathedral this morning. Archdeacon Averill preached.
