—4*. . A WIFE-BEATER PUNISHED. \T the Police Court yesterday, before Messrs. Joshua Jackson and R. 0. Hetidy, ■ I P.'s, a labourer named Victor Emanuel ' Carlson pleaded not guilty to assaulting hi* •■■;■••" wife, Mary Carlson, so as to cause her actual bodily harm. Sub-Inspector Gordon prosecuted, and accused was not represented by counsel. The complainant said that her husband came home about half-past ten a.m. on ■;-'"'•'■■ " Wednesday last, and accused her of having caused him to be locked up for drunkenness. Witness denied the allegation, and accused struck her on the body with a strap, ". causing several bruises. He then picked up a lemonade bottle, and hit witness on the back of the head with it. The wound 'caused by the blow was so serious that wit- • ness had to got six stitches put in it. •- v ■ Dr. Marsack, who attended the complainant said that the wound on her head whs about an inch long. She also had a number of bruises on her body. . Carlson said that when he reached home on.the day in question he found that his wife and a young man bad been drinking together, as beer bottles were strewn all about the house. As soon ac the young man saw witness he ran away. When wit- /,** ness' wife was getting on to her feet she stumbled and fell, causing the injuries to her head. Witness then told her to go and see » doctor. In reply to the Bench, accused admitted , striking his wife with a strap. He also alleged, that- his wife was addicted to drink. The Bench said they were satisfied that the charge had been proved, and sentenced Carlson to two months' imprisonment with ' hard labour. .*'", BREAKING A WINDOW. William Walters, alias Jerry McGinn, pleaded guilty to drunkenness ; to wilfully breaking a window pane, valued at 7s 6d, the property of John Franklin, and also to using obscene language in Victoria Road, Devonport. Sub-Inspector Gordon said that defendant was in the Esplanade Hotel, Devonport, and when he was coming out he put his list '■through the window. In doing so defendant inflicted injuries to his arm, and had to fie, attended to by a doctor. When defendant was questioned about the broken window he used the language complained of, ■ Defendant was fined ss, or in default 24 ■hours' imprisonment, on the first charge ; 20s, or in default seven days on the second, V'. and 40s, or in default one month's imprisonment, on the third. He was also ordered .%.- to pay costs, 17s 6d. MISCELLANEOUS. • Michael Kehoe, a young man, charged .' ."with.stealing a. suit of clothes, at Helens::vi!le, valued at 355, was remanded until Monday next. ,-"• Walter Hnrkins was remanded until this ,'•-' morning on a charge of drunkenness and procuring 'liquor during the currency of a prohibition order. -v,"' Six first offender;, were each fined 5s and .. costs, or in default 24 hours' imprisonment, for drunkenness, and another, who did not appear, was ordered to forfeit the amount . of bail, £1:
