""*J In sutmnaillftig Hie results of British shipping in 1906 " FttftßJJay" divides the industry into two (•lasses—those in which cargo and those In which passenger boats chiefly figure. The companies comprised in the first-named have a total paid-up capital of 4:1808,180, debenture debt of £3,669,142, and reserve funds £822,122. These companies own 433 steamers, aggregating 1.326.823 tons gross, tending in tho books tit £12,130,285, which is . considered to be more than their value to-day. Only 2i per cent, appears to have been written on tho original cost for depreciation during the year, and tho consequence is that shares in nearly all the companies are far below par value. Dividends paid have averaged 4 per cent., but in the absence of adequate provision for depreciation much of the dividend lias come out of capital or past earnings. The accounts of the passenger liners, in which the International Mercantile Marino Company is not included, show up better than tho cargo boats, inasmuch as they pay an average dividend of 4.46 per cent. If, however, tho 9 per cent, dividend of the P. and 0. were excluded average rate on the remainder would only be. 3.88 per cent., which is 100 small a re- " turn on capital in such a fluctuating; business. The 21 liner companies own 805 steamers, with a gross tonnage of 3,174,507 tons, standing in the '■»' books a' £33.040,203 The paid-up capital amounts to £20,340,129. and debentures to £10,391,838. Many of tho companies run their vessels uninsured, thus securing the profits of the underwriter. So far as the experience of last year is concerned, at any rate, it Is evident that there - is little truth in the assertion, so often made, says " Fajrpl.iy," by public men, that the condition of British shipping is one of great prosperity. THE STAR OF NEW ZEALAND. Tho fine steamer Star of New Zealand, of the Tyscr line, under the command of Captain E. I). Beck, arrived from west coast of England ports yesterday afternoon, and, being granted pratique, berthed at the Queen-street Wharf. The steamer, which comes into port in splendid order in all departments, has 6000 tons of general merchandise on board, about 1000 tons being for Auckland and the balance for Wellington and the South. Of the voyage the second officer reports : The Star of New Zealand left London for Glasgow on January 21, arriving on the 24th and leaving on the 29th, reaching Liverpool on the 30th. Took in cargo and left for Auckland direct .on February 14, and after clearing the Irish Sea, where foggy weather prevailed, fine weather continued nearly nil the way, excepting between Cape Leeuwin and Tasmania, where a succession of northerly gales, with heavy seas, were encountered, which delayed the progress of the steamer considerably. Cape Maria. Van Diemen was passed at, 7.30 p.m. on Wednesday and the harbour made at 2 p.m. yesterday, after a fine weather passage down the coast. The steamer will commence discharging her cargo this morning .and is expected to leave foi Wellington and the South early next week. PORT OF ONEHUNGA. Nt > ARRIVALS. Rarawa, s.s., 1072, J. C.
