JAM OF NAWANAGAR.
RANJITSINHJI DEFINITELY
APPOINTED.
By Telegraph.— Press Association.—Copyright. London, February 22. The Daily Mail announces that the Government of India has definitely selected Ranjitsinhji as Jain of Nawanagar.
The Jams of Newanagar are first-class chiefs of Kathiawar, and belong to the great .ladav race of Rajputs. The family of the •lams is regarded with special veneration as the foremost Hindu dynasty in the Kathiawar Peninsula. They came early into tontact, with the British, by whom they are held in high esteem for their undoubted loyalty and good government. K. S. Ranjitsinhji, now well known as a cricketer, was adopted in infancy as a son by the .lam iShri Vibhaji lianmalji, on his son Kalubha being disinherited and banished. Subsequent I however, another rod was horn t-> the .lam by a Mohammedan wife, and was in course of lime declared to be the rightful successor. On Vibhaji'? death the succession was disputed by Ranjitsinhji and by a .son of the disinherited Kalubha, but their claims were overruled by the Indian Government. The son recognised by Vibliaji was declared Jam. but his reign was not long. He died a few months ago at the ago of IK years. He had no son born to him by any of his three wives, and there was not an adopted heir. Hence the whole question of succession was reopened, the parties to it being Ranjitsinhji and a son of the disinherited Kalubha.
