THE GOLDFIELDS.

OLD HAURAKI.

Mr. Gn.t-n.i.AN-, .iux., has on view at his office some, samples of stone from the Old Hauraki mine, showing the class of gold in the new workings. It is estimated by the mine manager to yield 3oz to the pound.

In a report dated January 26 the manager ears: — Blaekmore and party are driving on two small leaders, one on the main level and the other a cross-leader in the slopes going off in the footwall. The cross-leader lias a very kindly appearance in it very favourable class of country, and occasionally shows colours of gold when breaking down. The lender in the main drive does not. look quite so promising, although small prospects are occasionally got by dish and mortar prospecting. Anderson and son are driving in the footwall of the leader of the lona section and have now the best class of country they have had since they started work in thus tribute. In the company's workings gold has been seen each time the leader lias lieen broken down, and some of the stone is fairly good.

WAIOTAHI. The manager of the Waiotahi mine reports for the week as follows : —No. 6 level: Driving east on the footwall dropper is in progress, and the.drive is now in a. distance of 147 ft. The reef here is about 4ft in width. The quartz is of a kindly appearance, and occasionally shows colours of gold. The second stope on the main reef above this level has been carried cast of No. 1 winze for a distance of 30ft, mid west for the same distance. We are now breaking out the second stope on the footwall dropper, where it comes into the main reef, immediately behind the No. 1 winze. The north crosscut from the main shaft is in a distance of 232 ft from the chamber. In this crosscut we are now penetrating abetter class of country, and the No. 5 reef should shortly be to hand. On the Cure reef west nothing has been done in the face, as the men have been engaged in taking along a shallow stojKj over the back of the drive, in order to get in the necessary timber, and provide ventilation. The third stope on this reef has been carried west of the rise for a distance of 43ft. The reef here is about 2ft. in width, and occasionally shows colours of gold. No. 5 level: Driving eastward on the main reef is being continued, and the drive is in 334 ft from the No. 1 winze. The reef is now about 4ft in width, and the quartz has a kindly appearance. Driving east on the footwall branch is also in hand, and the drive is in 165 ft. The reef varies a good deal in width, being now about 2ft in thickness, and occasionally showing colours of gold. In the drive west on the main reef from the main shaft nothing has been done during the week. The stopes above this level continue to produce a large quantity of crushing dirt. The south stope west of No. 1 winze has been carried to the No. 1 rise, and the filling in of this portion of .the stope is now in hand. No. 4 level: In the north-east drive we have now cut through the reef, which was 7ft in width, and driving east was commenced to-day. Driving west on the Cure reef has been in progress, and the drive is now in 83ft from the crosscut. The reef here is again of a mullocky character'. The stopes above this level continue to yield a good supply of payable crashing dirt. Cleaning up for the- month will take place on Friday next.

WAITANGI. [BY TKLEGRAPH. OWN CORRF.SPONDF.N'T.] Thames, Monday. Better progress has been made with the extension of the low level of the Waitangi mine during the last two or three weeks, on account of the improvement in the country, and the face is now in to within about "21ft of where the bottom of the winze from the upper level will strike. As this winze is sunk on the footwall side of the reef the hangingwall should be cut in the course of another week. Several ribs and veins of quartz have been cut during the past week, varying in size from half an inch up to two inches, and in some of them colours of gold have been seen. In the upper level the difficulty experienced owing to insufficient air has been to a great extent overcome by the introduction of air pipes on the level", and the men are now enabled to work continuously in the face of the drive eastward. This face has now been driven a distance of 54ft eastward of the point where the reef was cut through to the footwall, and there is al)OUt l. r >ft of reef stripped! from -the face. A start will be made to-day to break down a portion of the hangingwall of this, to enable the rails to be laid into the face.
