ACROSS THE ATLANTIC FOE LOVE.
DRAMATIC RACK TO SECURE A BRIDE. Nkw York, December 14. —Mis.- Anni* Persen, a pretty young Swedish woman, who has lived at Portland, Oregon, for 15 years, was detained by the immigration authorities here last week on her return from a visit to her relatives at Stockholm. The medical officer certified that she was suffering from trachoma, and in accordance with the rigid exclusion law the Immigration Commissioners ordered her deportation. Miss Persen protested in vain against the order and finally she telegraphed to her sweetheart, Mr. Paul B. Jordland, a wealthy lumber dealer of Portland, and an American citizen. He hurried across the continent, but arrived at Ellis Island after Miss Persen had been taken aboard the White Star liner Celtic. Mr. Jordland thereupon chartered a tug and caught the Celtic in the lower bay. He declares that he will many Miss Persen on arriving at Liverpool, and bring her back to America, despite the law,.
