FURTHER EARTHQUAKES.
SHOCKS IN RUSSIA AND ITALY. Sr. Petersburg, January 21. Earthquakes have been experienced at Elizabethpol, in Transcaucasia. and also in the island of alien. (Received January 22, 11.28 p.m.) St. Petersburg, January 22. Two earthquake shocks have been experienced at His, in Caucasia. Roan:, January 22. An earthquake with an undulating effect lias been felt at Palermo, in Sicily. Palermo suffered severely from earthquakes in the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth cent nrie -. The Australian seismographs were "silent " over the Jamaica shock, which it is considered must have been more, of % local diameter than that at Sail Francisco. SIR ALEXANDER SWKTTK.NHAM. Sir A lex,wider Swettenhani is 60 years of age. He wax educated at Cambridge. He. entered the Civil Service of Ceylon in 1868, and remained in it, until 1887>. In 1884 lie was appointed Receiver-*icneral of Cyprus, a post lie held until 1891, in which year he became Auditoi-Cenerai of Ceylon. In 1895 he was appointed Colonial Seevctury at Singapore, and was Ac! iiig (lovei nor of the Straits Settlements in 1898, and in 1900. He was Covernor of British Cniana from 1901 to 90, and in the. latter year became (rtivernor of Jamaica. lie was knighted in 1893.
