BURNED AT SEA.
LOSS OF THE ANCONA
Nkws has been received in Sydney that the well-known four-masted barque Ancona taught lire in the Bay of Biscay, and was abandoned. From the information to hand it appears that she was on a voyage from Antwerp to San Francisco with general cargo, aim that a lire broke out among the cargo on November 50, when in latitude 43.30 N. and longitude 8.53 W. The steamer Ardeola. bound from Las I'aimas to Liverpool, happened to be in the vicinity, and rescued the whole of the crew, and endeavoured to take the burning vessel in tow, but the lire gained and spread so rapidly that the idea had to be given up and the vessel abandoned. At that time the vessel was blazing furiously from stem to stern, with iniz/.eninast and jigger topmast gone, and all the sails on lire. Captain Maclean, of the Ardeola, on arrival at Liverpool, suited that should the Ancona remain afloat- she will be a very dangerous object to navigation. The Toiigariro, which arrived at Plymouth 011 December 5. from New Zealand ports, passed the Ancona the day before. The mast was standing, but the fire had apparently burnt out. The Ancona was owned by Me.-si s. G. 1. Soley and Co., Liverpool, and was a vessel of 2582 tons register, built in 1895, and made several passages to and from Australia.
