A DANGEROUS WHARF.
Sir.—The Auckland Harbour Board Tins a fair crop of claims for damages arising from the recent Calliope Dock accident, but it is not yet satisfied. Ii is strenuously looking for more at Orakei Wharf, which is a disgrace to the harbour in its present, condition. This morning about '20 passengers came on to the St. Heliers boat down a nearly vertical stage, which was trying i»s best to slip off i lie wharf. It is so bail that sometimes passengers climb up the ladder on the wharf sooner than risk going up the stage. Auckland, 1907! At present a few pounds to put in about a dozen stops will remedy the existing defect. In a few days, weeks, or month*, when a. heavy stage has slipped and killed several people, a few thousand pounds won't mend matters, and 1 shall have to say to the Auckland Harbour Hoard, " 1 told you so." I mil informed thai £10 would do the work, but if it costs £50 it. is cheap insurance, and, moreover, is the right thing to do. Not a day should br lost, in attending to this matter. This, I may mention, is a piece of pure philanthropy on mv part, as personally 1 find it safer, quicker, and easier to go out to the steamer in a boat! This is not., so far as regards the boat part cf it, a jocular assertion. P. A. Vailk.
