HOME RULE FOR IRELAND,

SPEECH BY MR. BRYCE.

ADVISES THE IRISH TO BE

PATIENT

By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright

(Received January 17. 11.28 p.m.)

London, January 17. Mr. Bryce (late Chief Secretary for Ireland), speaking at Newcastle, pleaded for toleration and patience as regards Ireland. Those talking of separation were an insignificant minority. It would be wiser if the Irish members trusted a friendly Government more, and acknowledged more cordially wliaf .. was trying to do for them. Education reforms were only possible by an Irish authority. He favoured giving the Irish pretty wide powers in regard to expenditure, and he was convinced that large powers of self-government would not be abused.
