THE CORPORATION STAFF.

ENTERTAINED BY THE MAYOR.

An interesting gathering took place at th* Mayor's room at the Municipal Buildings at noon on Saturday, when the officials and employees of tho corporation, to the number of about 50, were entertained at luncheon by the Mayor (Mi. A. M. Myers). His Worship, in extending to those present the compliments of tho season, paid a tribute to the zealous and painstaking manner in which the employees of the Council in. the various departments had carried out their duties during tho past year. There was, he said, a feeling abroad at one time that anybody was good enough to bo * member of the City Council staff, but ho was pleased to say that this impression no longer existed, and that the services performed by the staff ranked second to none in the colonies. Speaking of the recent revision of salaries, he said that be, was not one of those who considered that the remuneration for eacli man's services should be restricted to a certain amount. As a ease, in point, he referred to the administration, of the financial department. At one time, he said, the arrears of rates amounted to several hundred pound.?, but the present arrears did not total more than £50 odd. This showed that the citizens were getting the benefit of efficient services, which, in the opinion of the members of the present Council and himself, should be adequately remunerated. He believed that by an efficient discharge of their duties they could do a great deal towards' impressing the suburban bodies with the advantages of amalgamation with the city, and thus assist towards making a Greater Auckland an accomplished fact. He referred to the policy of progress that had been inaugurated during the past year, and after expressing a hope that many of die works would be earned to a completion during the coming year, spoke of the proposed e«planado along tlie waterfront and a continuation of the present pohev in regard to open spaces as matters that should be kept in view in the future.

Mr. \\. L. Bush, city engineer, in acknowledging the Mayor's compliments, referred to the energy displayed by the Mayor in the direction of making Auckland an ideal city, and said that His Worship's aspirations were reflected in everv member of the staff. He proposed the "health of the Mayor and councillors. The toast was drunk with muiiicul honours, followed by cheers for His Worship, Mrs., and Mis' Myers. . -Messrs. J. S. Brigham (citv treasurer), C. Woollev superintendent of the fire brigade), and Hickhng (city valuer) also acknowledged the kind remarks of tho Mayor.
