To see the smart, erect, well-groomed, tightly-buttoned little figure of Lord Roberts, his fresh and healthy complexion, clear, bright eyes, and firm step, as he walks from the War Office to his house in the West End, no one would imagine that our most popular hero is now in his 75th year. It is now 55 years since he entered the Bengal Artillery, and began the career of unbroken military successes which has made his name. one of the most respected and beloved in the Empire. He has never been afraid of anything in his life except perhaps a cat, his aversion for which is well known, and stories are told doubtless " ben : trovato" of public functions being stopped to allow of the removal of a harmless pussy before the great soldier's composure could be restored. His lordship is one of the -hearted of men, and noted for his unfailing kindness to ■ and solicitude for child ™
