" Thk pick ,of England's. second class , orworking people," was the description applied by one of the passengers by/the Corinthic, which arrived from London on Wednesday, to (he 500 ■ odd immigrants she brought, to New Zealand, and they looked it—strong men, young men, others in the prime of life, everyone, of them with "a bit of capital," all healthy, well set up. and-eager. There were, numbers of mechanics, carpenters,', plasterers, moulders,' ai»f' members ', of . • other trades,, besides' farmers and those. are here to "go on tho land." Altogether a.' contingent of colonists of a, desirable ' class. 'What' Ins brought 'them,to New Zealand'.' One receives the : same reply from ' almost' all. " Trade '"is bad and ' wages are low *' at Home." • Some have .thrown, tip . poorlypaid • jobs-- to come " in ■" search of better wages;' some '.h aye deserted the Old 'Land because there .• i was .no , employment ~for •them. Most :.vdf>,the. immigrants by the Corinthic are shaping their course towards the towns, several leaving tor ■'Auckland,' Christchurch, : Dunedin, 'i and .'Grey mouth. There was a large batch; of . women and girls on "board, to say nothing of scores of children. - Inquiries" failed "to find amongst them many domestic ' workers. ■There were a few. * One or two girls had left service at. Home," but were out here to join friends, They seemed surprised to learn that .wages for domestics were so much better. :
