THE DUST NUISANCE.

CITY COUNCIL AND MR. P. A. ELK'S LETTER j At the meeting of the City Council '»-** evening the letter written by Mr. P. A. Vaile regarding the dust nuisance, which lias already been published, was read' to members. In concluding his letter Mr. Vaile offered to meet, tin- Council and engineer in private or public or on tlte roads and 10 demonstrate the facte referred to (faulty construction of roads). As this was a matter of great public interest he bad handed his letter to the press, and proposed also to publish the Council's reply. To the letter the city engineer added a memo, as follows: '"The City Council is fully aware of its responsibilities with regard to the roads, and I cannot sec that any useful purpose would bo served by discussing this matter with Mr. Vaile either iu public or private." The Mayer moved that the letter be sent to the Streets Committee for a reply. Statements had been made public through th» press attacking the Council's works, and the committee could reply fully. Mr. H. Kartell contradicted seme of the statements made in the letter. Mr. Bagnall thought. that tending the letter to tho committee wa-s paying a little too much attention to Mr. Vaile' effusions. The manner in which Mr. Vaile wrote of the meeting of the local bodies' delegates was putting it on rather much. Mr. Tudehope thought- that if the committee did reply it should he in very emphatic, trims.. The use of such binding as Mr. Viiile alleged was used was a thing of | long ago. j Mi. Kriiiivan moved as an amendment.; J that a copy of the engineer's memo, be to"j warded to Mr. Vaile. ; fit* amendment was carried.
