THE CEMETERY DRIDGE.
The Streets Committee of the City Council, reporting on the matter of the ferro-concrete or steel bridge over the Cemetery Gully, stated at, the Council meeting last evening that Mr. P. F. Battley had offered his property »t £2200. Mr. J. Thornes and the city valuer had reported on the values 01 the properties required. The committee recommended that tenders be invited, as suggested at previous meetings, and that the engineer's recommendation that a premium of' £100 be paid for the best and most economical design in that class of construction, which was not adopted by the Council, should be approved. The committee further recommended that the bridge be named "Grafton Brigde," and ihat the Mayor be empowered to act in purchasing the two properties on the top of the hill at Bridge-street and Grafton Road, and that valuations l>e obtained of the third property i acquired. Mr. Casey .-aid he did not think the Council had any intention or erecting an iron or steel bridge, and ho thought the £100 premium for the best and moil economical design in the clafcs of construction I which the Council did not adopt would only be wasted. After discussion, in which j ieiro-concivte was generally favoured for construction, it was decided, on the motion j of the Mayor, to add the words to the clause regarding the premium for the design.
