Lieutenant Peary is returning home from his Arctic expedition. , A gale and tidal wave has done damage to the extent of £1,000,000 along the Rivera coast. A tram-driver was electrocuted at Miramar (Wellington) yesterday by catching hold of a broken electric wire. The English municipal elections have so far resulted in many gains for the Moderates. The Labour and Progressive parties have lost many seats. A couple of cases of pocket-picking have been reported to the Wellington police. The culprits are believed to be birds of passage on.their way to the Exhibition. President Roosevelt's intervention in the New York State election campaign, and Mr. Elihu Hoot's denunciation of Mr. FTenrst, have caused a tremendous sensation. "There are a number of people who sneer at the number of prohibition orders which are issued from this Court," said Mr. C. C Kettle, S.M., at Saturday's sitting of the Police Court, " but 1 know for a fact that in a great many cases they do an enormous amount of good."
