NEW YORK STATE ELECTION.
INTERVENTION OF THE PRESIDENT. DENUNCIATION OF HEARST. "A TREMENDOUS SENSATION." By Telegraph.—Press Association.—Copyright. New York, November 2. Mr. Elihu Root, Secretary of State, speaking at Utika on behalf of President Roosevelt, fiercely denounced Mr. Hearst as an insincere self-seek-ing demagogue. . (Received November 4. 4.52 p.m.) New York, November 3. President Roosevelt's unprecedented intervention in the New York State election campaign is likely to cause Mr. Hearst's defeat. Mr. Root's terrible arraignment of Hearst for sowing the seeds of class hatred and fermenting discontent, and inciting the men who murdered President McKinley, has caused a' tremendous sensation. Almost all the New York journals enthusiastically applaud President Roosevelt's impressive and startling note of warning. Mr. Hearst is the owner of newspapers in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, and San Francisco. Though not the, originator of " yellow journalism," Ik- has carried it to greater heights of audacity than any of his preceptors. Hence, while his papers arc perhaps the most widely read in the* States, he himself is one of the most unpopular men in America. He is both hated and 'feared. That, however, docs not trouble him. He has great wealth, which he inherited from his father, and greater ambition. He aims at the Presidency, and as a stepping-stone to that, office is now seeking election as Governor of New Yoit State.
