SUDDEN THERMAL OUTBURST.
NEW GEYSERS' AT WHAKAREWAREWA. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] KOTORUA, Saturday. Two eruptions took place at Whakarewarewa at halt-past eleven last night, near Guide Bella's house on the native reserve. There had been evidences of abnormal geyser activity for some days past, but when the native residents retired for the night there was no indication of any alarming outbreak. At half-past eleven p.m. the Maoris were aroused by a loud report, and rushing out of their houses discovered new geysers playing near the bridge. Mud, water, and stones were thrown to a height of 500 ft. The stones ranged from the 6ize of an egg upwards. The eruption lasted twenty minutes, and covered with mud the roofs of surrounding whares, and the side of the hil 1 beyond the whares. Stones were thrown a considerable distance. The geysers are now quiet. The natives are much alarmed, and fear another eruption.
