Saturday afternoon. -' -The -,-..-■ -s,, ». *„ ».« " ,<-■ WW >■»» *J" 1 1 i weather was perfect,- a blue sky bright sun, and as usual there was a represent.»tive gathering- of lxwlers from sister clubs about Auckland, and a brave array of the fair sex. The- charmingly-situated enclosure, with its pleasing surroundings, was gay with bunting and flags, the latter including the champion pennant, held by the parent club, and given the place of honour on the pavilion flagpole. On the slope between the two greens was the Maori motto, "Haeremai," and the club colour* figured prominently among the decorations of tho refreshment quarters, where the president's wife, Mrs. Mennie, with several other members of the. lair m<x, dispensed afternoon tea, assisted by a bevy of young ladies, who looked to the wants of tho onlookers about tho greens. Altogether it may be said that the function was a highly successful one, enjoyable to all concerned, and in every way creditable to the authorities of the Auckland Bowling Club. In declaring the Iwwling green open, the president of the dub, Mr. J. M. Mennie, extended a hearty welcome to all present, and expressed gratification at seeing so many ladies present, remarking that the- members of the fair sex always ' gave, brightness, colour, and charm to the scene. The occasion was tho 44th year in which bowls had! been played on the green. Mrs. Jlennio fulfilled tho time-honored custom of throwing the jack across the green to the accompaniment of cheers from tho assembled lx>wlors, and the match between teams representing; the president and. vices-presidents was then proceeded with, 14. rinks 'being occupied. The match was won by the president's team by 32 points—3o6 points to 274—and the result when announced by Mr. Mennie after 'ho close of play was received with loud cheers. (In the president's call three hearty cheers were then given for the visiting bowlers, and were heartily reciprocated by tho latter on the call of Mr. A. Cbutts, president of the Ponsonby Club, who thanked the Auckland Club members and the ladies for an enjoyable afternoon on behalf of tho guests. Cheers were also given for the president and Mrs. Mennie, and the. ladies of tho Auckland Club responsible foi tho afternoon tea arrangements. Mr. S. W. Coldicutt, lion, secretary and treasurer of the club, supported by members of the committee, gave the president every assistance in catering for the comfort of visiting bowlers and their lady friends.
