ATHLETICS.
At the weekly meeting of the committee of the Auckland Amateur Athletic Club on Tuesday evening, the list of new members was augmented by 31, making a record, of 126 new members for the last three weeks. The executive are certainly to be congratulated on the energy displayed by them in tire effort they are making to reinstate amateur sports in the position held by them many years previously, when the local club was the most powerful in the? colony. A considerable amount of interest is being displayed over (he relay race- on the programme for the December meeting, between team's of four chosen from the various mercantile, insurance*, banking, and professional houses in the city, for which a handsome trophy will be donated. As the athletic club committee' recognise the value of the presence of the fair.sex at these gatherings in assisting to raise the standard of the snort they have decided to admit ladies free at. the carnival to he held in Victoria Park on December 22. Betting will lie absolutely prohibited. The club have been promised assistance for their cycling events, to lie run at their December meeting, from the New Zealand League of Wheelmen. The council of the New Zealand Athletic Union has issued a manifesto declaring that any of lis competitors who compete at the Scottish societies' .sports in Ohristchurch on January 1 and 2 will be disqualified for five years, and that no competitor thereat will be allowed to perform at any meeting, in the colony under the jurisdiction of (he union during that time. This also extends to Australia.
