Thk Hon. G. Fowlds expects to be W Auckland about November 20. Mrs. Baume, sen., was a passenger from Wellington by the Takapuna yerterday. ■. The Hon. H. Scotland. M.L.C., arrived from Wellington yesterday by the Takapuna. The Revs. Fa veil, Reeve, and T. Fisher left yesterday afternoon for New Plymouth by the Takapuna. The Native Minister (the Hon. J. (\, r . roll) is still confined to his house in Web lington by illness. The Hon. W. Hall-Jones, Minister for Public Works, who has been in indifferent health for some days past, is reported to be recovering. Lieutenant Pickering, R.N., formerly engaged in enrolling naval reserves in the colour, and Mrs. Pickering, returned to Wellington from Sydney last Wednesday. Mr. C. J. Crawford, of Miramax, who had been on a visit to England, landed in Wellington by the Wimmera on Wednesday. He is accompanied by Mrs. Crawford. Mr. C. W. Chilman, manager of the To Aro branch of the Bank of New Zealand, and Mrs. Chilman were passengers for Weilington by the Wimmera from Sydney on Wednesday. Captain 0. Svensou, of the Soloman Islands, passed through Wellington on Wednesday last, en route for Christ church. He remains there a few days, and goes thence to Australia. Miss Helene Fodor, who is connected with Girton .College, was a through passenger ' for Christchurch by the Wimmera, which arrived at Wellington from Sydney on Wednesday. Mr. M. M. Kirkbride, M.H.R., is still i n a somewhat critical condition at Rawlingstone private hospital. The' Auckland Agricultural and Pastoral Association yesterday passed a vote of sympathy with Mr. M. M. Kirkbride, M.H.R., in his illness. Dr. Makgill. Government bacteriologist, has been visiting Hamilton during tin past few days for the purpose of examining the water supply there, and he has secured samples of the water for bacteriological and chemical examination at Wellington whither he returned yesterday. Mr. J. B. Hey wood, the new Assis-tant-Controlle. and Auditor-General, aud Mr. R. J. Collins, his successor, in the position of Secretary of the Treasury; as-, sumed their new duties on Thursday. Mr. R. B. Vincent, of the Treasury staff, has been appointed acting accountant of that branch of the public service, vice Mr. R. J. Collins. - At Kaeo on Monday last Miss E. H. Stephenson, who lias resigned her position as postmistress, was the. recipient of a handsome gold watch, suitably inscribed. Th< presentation was made on behalf of the subscribers by Mr. H. K. Ridings, who referrec in eulogistic terms to Miss Stt-phenson't abilities and her unfailing courtesy. While Mr. J. K. Logan, superintendent of electric lines, is on a visit to the Old Country, the duties of the position will be carried out by Mr. W. G. Meddings, senior district inspector. Mr. Logan will leave Wellington tor "Sydney to-day, and he will be away about six months. He is going under instructions from the Premier, to examine the different telephone .systems in the Old Country, Europe, and America. Speaking of Mr. Clifton'.*; transfer from Auckland to take charge of the Stock Department, Mr. J. B. Rutherford, at the meeting of ..the Auckland Agricultural ,and Pastoral Association Committed yesterday, said the farming community had very great eonh'dence in Mr. Clifton, and was much indebted to him for general courtesy and ready assistance. The meeting decided to tender its congratulations to Mr. Clifton. A Wellington Press Association telegram states that the Minister for Lands (the Hon. R. McNab) intends leaving for Christchurch on Monday evening. He will inspect the Culrerden Estate, which has been put forward as a desirable estate to purchase under the Lauds for Settlement Act,, on Wednesday, and on Thursday will be present at the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Society's Show. Mr. McNab hopes to reach his own electorate on Saturday, the 10th inst.
